Penycloddiau Hillfort on the Clwydian Range is the largest and most visited of all the Iron Age hillforts found on the Range.

Between 11th and 22nd May archaeologists from the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT) are excavating a mound found on the northern end of hillfort. The mound has been heavily eroded by the Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail which runs through the centre of the hillfort and across the top of the mound.

Last year a trial excavation took place to find out if the mound was natural geology or not. The excavation showed the mound may be a Bronze Age burial mound dating back around 4,000 years, making it older than the hillfort it sits in.

This year we will be opening a larger trench to record the mound before it is lost through erosion and with any luck confirm if it is a burial mound.
