Hillforts have features which suggest that they were built to defend and protect. These features are large earthen banks (called ramparts) and ditches. The rampart would have been topped with a large wooden fence (called a palisade). They are also built at the top of very steep hills which would have made it hard for someone to attack. Some hillforts also have inturned entrances, where the ramparts turn 90 degrees into the inside of the hillfort and create a passageway. Some hillforts possibly have guardchambers located at the entrance where a sentry could keep guard and monitor who was allowed into the hillfort.
