Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) have reddish brown plumage and are found on moorland across the UK. Their distinctive call is often heard to be saying "Go back, go back, go back, go back". Red Grouse feed on the young shoots of heather and bilberry which flourish after cutting and burning.
Red Grouse are a game bird and are bred for the shooting season in many places. This has benefits to heather moorlands as those where shooting takes place are well managed with an excellent age structure, which benefits agriculture and other moorland birds.
Today, Red Grouse are more commonly found than Black Grouse on the heather moorlands of the Clwydian Range and Llantysilio mountains.
